The first 6 miles on Springhill Avenue west of Mobile were tough with lots of rush hour traffic. I left the hotel at 7:50. If I had waited another hour it would have been better but I didn't want to lose the daylight. Mobile is not bike friendly and there was no bike lane or shoulder. Down here it was about 48 degrees this morning and it got up to 75 degrees at mid afternoon. The sun was out all day. Tomorrow we will have some rain. At about the 25 mile mark I left Alabama and entered Mississippi. In Mississippi the road west was fairly quiet. I was feeling pretty good. The road surface was often pretty rough. There are few bridges over the Pascagoula River so the routes to the west are fairly limited. Adventure Cycling has picked out the best crossing from what I could tell. The Pascagoula River. Even though it is a small river there are lots of houses on the west bluff. As I am often prone to do, I went off route when I got to the intersection of Highway 614 and the Old River Road. Instead of heading south on the Old River Road to Van Cleve, I headed north for 11 miles on Old River Road and along the river until I reached Highway 57 which I then took due north another 12 miles to the intersection with Highway 26. Old River Road had a rough surface, lots of friendly dogs and some nice backwoods scenery. Highway 57 was newly paved, lightly used and smooth as silk. With the wind behind me I roared up this road at about 22 mph. At the intersection of 57 and 26 I took a nice break at a corner store. It was the typical rural store that tries to provide gas, groceries, fast food and everything else, because there are no other stores. The food was all deep fried and turned my stomach so I had Powerade, ice cream and a Hershey bar while visiting with a couple local men who wanted to know about my trek. If you look closely you can see that I have probably lost about five pounds during the last six days of riding. I was pretty drained at this moment and hadn't eaten much but because of the easier riding conditions I still felt fairly strong. The bike needed a rest too. It has held up very well. No flats and just one broken screw so far. I have it loaded just about right. That is my camelback laying on top. The last 22 miles were on Highway 26 going due west to Wiggins. The road is narrow, hilly, rough and though it is not heavily traveled it carries a fair number of logging trucks and other commercial traffic. Many cyclists would avoid it but many experienced touring cyclists are willing to take such a road if it is the shortest way to a destination. In riding I am willing to pull of a bad road when there is no shoulder and trucks are coming up behind me with no room to pass because of hills or oncoming traffic. I did that twice during the first ten miles. Then I did it again during the last ten miles and doing so might have save my life: There was a point about 8 miles out of Wiggins when I knew I had a pickup coming up behind me followed by a large logging truck. There happened to be oncoming traffic so I took the bike off the road about three feet and came to a stop. As the logging truck passed by in the right lane I saw that something was wrong with the load and it had a steel bar or wood of some sort jutting out of the trailer to the right about three feet beyond the truck. I'm sure it was inadvertent and the trucker probably didn't even know it was there. If I had remained on the road I expect that it would have hit me and I wouldn't be writing a note tonight. Thank God for watching over me. Well, I made it into Wiggins and am a nice Best Western. I got in at 2:20 and feel a need to recuperate and plan for tomorrow. Rain is forecast so I may end up with some extra rest and that wouldn't be a bad idea. Best wishes to everyone.
